Many people suffer from poor sleep, which can take a toll on their health and wellness. Getting enough sleep is essential to your mental and physical health. One way to help improve your sleep at night and for daytime naps, is to get relaxation massages.

In a research study published in the July 2025 issue of the journal BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, researchers share their findings from a study that put relaxation massage to the test to see if it improved sleep quality. The results will be of interest to those who want to improve their sleep quality, whether at night or for taking daytime naps.

The Study

The study included 15 people who were split into three groups, with one receiving sports massages, one group receiving relaxation massages, and one group getting no massage. Those who were in the massage group received 30-minute massages, and information was gathered regarding sleep quality, as well as brain activity using an EEG system.

The results of the study showed significant differences in those who received massages and those who didn’t. The group receiving the relaxation massage had the biggest improvement, with their relaxation scores increasing over 23% after their massage session. Further, their research showed that sleep quality improved only in the group that received the relaxation massage.

The study concludes that relaxation massage can positively impact the quality and quantity of sleep (including in daytime napping), and enhances well-being, reduces work-related stress, improves performance, and promotes overall healthy living.

Napping Benefits

Not sure how you feel about daytime napping? The research study reports that short naps of no more than 60 minutes are ideal for quickly boosting alertness and cognitive function. They are also beneficial for those who are having difficulty sleeping at night. Relaxation massage not only helps with relaxing people for a daytime nap, but they report that it can play a crucial role in helping people get a good night’s sleep.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the optimal length of time for a daytime nap is 15-30 minutes. Set a timer for 30 minutes, giving yourself a chance to get a quick nap in without ending up with grogginess. A short catnap can be great for increasing alertness and helps you feel refreshed to get through the rest of the day.
